Welcome to The Read Rover — my little corner of the internet for books I’ve read, loved, learned from, argued with, recommended to other people, or stayed up entirely too late finishing.
My shelves tend to wander through a few familiar neighborhoods: disability and rehabilitation, counseling and mental health, life after high-control groups, crafting and creativity, and plenty of memoirs from people whose lives intersect with those worlds.
And then there are the murder mysteries and thrillers.
Lots of murder mysteries and thrillers.
The Read Rover isn’t meant to be a comprehensive book guide. It’s a curated collection of books and resources that have been useful, interesting, meaningful, or just plain entertaining to me. Some are professional resources. Some changed the way I think. Some helped me understand someone else’s experience. And some kept me awake until 2 a.m. because apparently I needed to know who killed somebody before I could go to sleep.

What I’m Reading
What’s currently on my nightstand, in my bag, or keeping me from going to bed at a reasonable hour.
Disability & Rehabilitation
Books about brain injury, spinal cord injury, disability, accessibility, rehabilitation, and the lived experience of disability.
Counseling Resources
Books, workbooks, and other resources I’ve found useful in counseling, rehabilitation, education, and professional practice.
Mental Health & Personal Growth
Books about mental health, relationships, coping, identity, change, and figuring out this whole being-human business.
Cult Recovery & Reclaiming Yourself
Memoirs and resources about high-control groups, coercion, leaving, unlearning, rebuilding, and figuring out who you are afterward.
Crafting & Creativity
Knitting, crochet, art, creativity, and the surprisingly powerful relationship between making things and feeling human.
Just Because I Loved It
No educational objective. No professional justification. I just loved the book. Expect murder, mysteries, thrillers, questionable decisions, and people who really should have known better.
How The Read Rover Bookstore Works

The Read Rover is my curated bookstore through Bookshop.org, an online bookselling platform built to support independent bookstores.
I choose the books and build the shelves you see here, but I don’t stock, package, or ship anything myself. When you click over to The Read Rover bookstore, Bookshop.org handles your purchase and fulfillment.
The Read Rover is a Bookshop.org affiliate, which means I may earn a commission when you purchase books through my links. Bookshop.org also uses a portion of eligible sales to support participating independent bookstores through its profit-sharing program. The store I partnered with is Thank You Books in Birmingham, Alabama, a women and minority owned store.
So you can discover something good to read, support The Read Rover, and help support independent bookselling at the same time.

Advance Reader Reviews
From time to time, I also receive Advance Reader Copies (ARCs)—books provided before publication so readers can read and offer an honest review.
Receiving an advance copy does not guarantee a positive review. My reviews reflect my own experience with the book, and when I receive a book in advance or for free, I’ll disclose that with the review.
So occasionally you’ll find me talking about a book you can’t even buy yet. Consider it your sneak peek at what’s coming to the bookshelf.
you can find these reviews on both Goodreads, Substack and on this webpage-Advance Reader Reviews.
From the Bookshelf: Substack
Sometimes a star rating or a paragraph isn’t enough.
My Substack is where I have room to wander a little further—longer book reviews, thoughts inspired by what I’m reading, recommendations, reading lists, and conversations that don’t quite fit neatly onto a bookshelf.
It’s also a good place to follow along as The Read Rover and Uglier Than Homemade Sin grow, including the places where books, disability, rehabilitation, mental health, crafting, and everyday life inevitably bump into one another.
Subscribe if you’d like the occasional dispatch delivered straight to your inbox.

A Perfectly Reasonable Disclaimer
Yes, I work in mental health. Yes, an alarming percentage of the fiction I read involves murder. These two facts are unrelated.
The professional shelves contain resources I genuinely find useful. The fun shelves contain mysteries, thrillers, questionable characters, and people who absolutely should not have gone into the basement.
Recommendations are personal opinions, not clinical advice.
Please read responsibly—and for heaven’s sake, don’t go into the basement.
